The Ponderings of SCsquared

The musings of my self-discovery

Repeat that YouTube!

It is no secret, I love YouTube.
No, not in that, yeah I watch videos on YouTube way, more in the I carve out time in my schedule to watch YouTube type of way. Am I some sort of expert on it? Nope! I do enjoy what I enjoy though and so here’s a list of my faves (no Jamaican channels allowed or included).

Here’s my Top 5. Continue reading “Repeat that YouTube!”

Because: The Internet

Language is an ever revolving thing influenced by geography, culture, exposure and of course experience. In the age that we live, all these things have grown exponentially and of course, the evolution of langugae with it.

I hear myself saying things and laugh at how much my own expressions have been influenced by my media consumption. This is even more glaringly so when I say / type something that is not comprehended by someone else. So here I am, showing you some of the things that have influenced my language in 2013:

  1. Because… (Twitter)
Somehow I started seeing it, then understood it wasn’t a mistake, then somehow it became a part of my vernacular. It’s almost an expression of apathy, if it had some more structure, but it doesn’t. Because Life.
  2. I love yo faces! (Phillip DeFranco)
I am very much a member of “The Nation” which just happens to be global. When I first started watching PhillyD he was like sketch comedy meets news commentary in a completely off kilter way. In closing almost every time, he says “I love yo faces”. I started thinking but not saying. Then on day it got past my filter and has since been unrestrained.
  3. All the … (Twitter)
I don’t even know when I first read this. It may have been twitter but it may also have been The Oatmeal. It sounds like this: All the feels. All the hurts. All the sads. All the Loves. All the Happys.
Grammatically incorrect, yet, perfectly stated. An expression of high levels of whatever the subject matter.
  4. Gladiators
So on Thursday nights we come crawling out of the woodwork. We pretend that Scandal is more than a TV show, we pretend that we too keep peoples images intact despite insurmountable odds and evidence. Honestly, this is one of those things you either know or don’t and if you don’t then ignore all social media on a Thursday. It is Gladiator Day.
  5. #ChinitaGoodaz (courtesy of The Voice and Dutty Berry)
Well, this and almost every other TeamTessanne related hashtag became a real part of conversation for the latter part of the year. Including “Tess & The Tess-less” “TeamBadMindMichaelCuffe” “TeamBreadAndButta” etc… but not excluding any and everything Dutty Berry said on his weekly review of The Voice (PS. Wi still waitin on one for the final)
  6. Happy Happy Happy! (Duck Dynasty)
I am a HUUUUUGE Duck Dynasty fan. No, seriously. I happened upon it one day and was immediately hooked. I love that they are not the usual reality TV squabblers and that they are unabashedly Christian. The Patriarch on the show is Phil, and “Happy Happy Happy” comes from him. He just states some plain simple things and says if you can do that, they you will be “Happy Happy Happy”
  7. I am Second
This site of video testimonies is just awesome. Different people thell their journey to putting God first in their lives. They are from all walks of life and all sorts of stories. The first one I watched was Brian Welch from Korn, this was interesting more at the time because I was a fan. Now, the phrase has become a quiet mantra, I try to remember God is First and I am Second.
  8. #Insta… (instagram)
Short for instant, it has become the apex of its own definitive root. We see our niece/nephew/child for the very first time and capture the moment “Insta-Love”. Yes.
  9. …type stuff (Phillip DeFranco)
I find I say things like “Newsy Type Stuff” or “Sexy Type Stuff” or pretty much any thing that can seem similar or exactly
  10. “Pope” as a noun, adjective and verb.
Phrases like “Get my Pope on”, “I need Pope”, “You’ve been Pope-ed”, “The Pope rise up in her” comes easy to all Gladiators. Seriously, just get the Shondaland Channel aka ABC and watch.

My Kardashian Problem

I know, I know, I know! It does not need to be said how this or that, they are, I already know. That being said:

I enjoy watching the Kardashians and their attachments on E! I can’t help it, it is the reason Ryan Seacrest was placed on this planet – I am convinced. Why do I enjoy it? Simple, I enjoy observing people, how they interact with each other, and pretty much why they do what they do. Interestingly enough, I don’t actually spend much of my news time on them – I generally am not into the gossip magazines or columns and that seems to be where their faces and names seem to appear the most.

In truth, I think I like them, in the same way I like most people. I’m not trying to judge them as good or evil, what they do is what they do. I’m not all fan-girl, thinking they are infallible nor am I a hater, thinking they should be banished to Mars. I just enjoy watching the shows, that’s almost an entire year of Kardashian antics if you add them up – which is more consistent than fully scripted shows. Continue reading “My Kardashian Problem”

Day 26

Challenge: First 10 songs to play on shuffle on your iPod.

My iPod loves me and I love it. I pressed play and this is what came up:

  1. Bubbly – Colbie Calliat ~ you already read that post :)
  2. Hello – Christina Aguilera ~ an anthem of self-empowerment, encouraging you to be unapologetically you.
  3. Before He Cheats – Carrie Underwood ~ this song makes me laugh, the anger with a smile song. I know some girls that would do these things
  4. Stolen Moments – Alicia Keys ~ I can’t help but wonder if this is about Swizz
  5. Jamaican Girl – Obie Trice ft. Brick & Lace ~ I can’t help but bounce and rock to this song
  6. Shy That Way – Jason Mraz & Tristan Prettyman
  7. Can You Stand The Rain – New Edition ~ the ULTIMATE relationship song/question, it’s not how we deal with life when things are good that counts, it’s when the going gets rough that I know your worth.
  8. Supernatural – DC Talk ~ I’ve been a fan for years
  9. The Gods Love Nubia – Kelly Price ~ this is from Elton John & Tim Rice’s musical Aida. I like all these songs.
  10. Meant To Live – Switchfoot ~ You know what, we really were

I may revisit this and add the videos…

Day 24

Challenge: A song that makes you smile.

Wow! This could be sooo many songs… how about I post 3 songs?

1. Always the romantic, this had to be in here:

Key Lyrics: ‘Cause every time you hold me in your arms, I’m comfortable enough to feel your warmth

2. This was introduced to me 2 months ago and I’m still smiling:

Key Lyrics: Her lips, her lips, I could kiss all day if she’d let me

3. Can never leave Disney out :)

Key Lyrics: Can your friends go abracadabra, let ‘er rip and let the sucker disappear?

Key Lyrics: Free to run around all day, Free to do it all my way

4. This song can wake me up any day ~ the combo of these two was just a smart move for my radio

Key Lyrics: Heels, mek, gyal, fret.

There is so much more that could be added to this but this is more than was asked for, so yep :)

Day 13

Challenge: Your least favorite female group.

Again, this would just be easier if I was asked for a single person. More interesting is that it took me 3 days to figure this out. I had to remind myself that it said LEAST FAVORITE not most hated. So here goes:

The reason I chose this group is because not only are they an obvious attempt at being bubblegum pop, but they also have no true identity. Each single seems to be a different identity than the one before, so much so that the original trio seems to have been changed. I’m not saying there is no value to them, but I’m not sure island records knew what to do with them. So I just feel sorry for them.

I present to you: Sugarbabes

Day 12

Challenge: Your favorite female group.

This is ridiculous, I’d have an easier time choosing a fave female singer, and we already know how decisive I am on faves…

I could have cheated and pulled up any random Motown group, or even a 90’s soul group, maybe even call Salt n Peppa out of retirement. No, I didn’t cheat, I thought about it, and truthfully the only female group I really listen to of late is the group Barlow Girl.

Barlow Girl is a Christian Rock group who seem to write out of a dark place while acknowledging hope. Even in songs of abandonment their lyrics seem to reflect a knowledge that all is not lost. They do not present a saccharin picture of Christianity, there is no “it’s all rainbows and sunshine” in their music, it’s more, today is a rough day and I don’t feel you but I know you’re there kind of thing.

Yes, it seems conflicted, but so much of life is that way, and more personally, I tend to be.

Day 7

Challenge: Your Crush

Lets first define this thing:
crush |krə sh | noun

  1. [usu. in sing. ] a crowd of people pressed closely together, esp. in an enclosed space : a number of youngsters fainted in the crush.
  2. informal a brief but intense infatuation for someone, esp. someone unattainable or inappropriate : she did have a crush on Dr. Russell.
  3. a drink made from the juice of pressed fruit: lemon crush.

Let us agree that we are speaking of “noun 2” and move from that point.

Now, it seems of late there is a growing interest in me crushing on someone… I have no response to that really except, “see video below” for my attitude towards crushes:

Now that that is said and done, I do crush, but I don’t think there is anyone that is unattainable and I have never considered anyone I’m attracted to to be inappropriate. I, however, am at the point in my life in which crushes are a passing fancy and I would much rather have something of substance.

So, let’s enjoy a crush while it lasts. If it grows into something bigger, nice. If it doesn’t, no problem. Either way, it’s just a little crush.

Oh Yeah! I’m supposed to reveal my crush… well, he knows and I know and you probably think you know. You may just be right, I’ve never been good at hiding or lying. So yeah, it’s possibly exactly who you think. Then again, do you think you know me well enough to know? Guess anyway…

This is just for you, my crush :)

Day 6

Challenge: A song that makes you cry.

There isn’t a current one or one I can think of, so I dug into my memory box to find one that used to guarantee tears.

I post this version because it’s the original, it reminds me of my Mother. She loved The Beatles, more so, she loved Paul. I have her Beatles collectors cards in a box, all of them Paul. I always liked this song, after she died, and I heard it again, I couldn’t help but cry. This continued for a while, now, I’m good – the song plays, I sing, I smile.

Yesterday – The Beatles

All my troubles seemed so far away,
Now it looks as though they’re here to stay,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

I’m not half the man I used to be,
There’s a shadow hanging over me,
Oh, yesterday came suddenly.

Why she
Had to go I don’t know, she wouldn’t say.
I said,
Something wrong, now I long for yesterday.

Love was such an easy game to play,
Now I need a place to hide away,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Why she
Had to go I don’t know, she wouldn’t say.
I said,
Something wrong, now I long for yesterday.

Love was such an easy game to play,
Now I need a place to hide away,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
